With the chill in the air, our December Pattern of the Month is Snowflakes!

In collaboration with National Geographic, Mottahedeh has recently release the new pattern called "SNOWFLAKE"!

Imagine a candlelight dinner, a holiday gathering or an after snowman outing with a hot cup of cocoa. National Geographic's photo archive is the inspiration for this delicate design. Each actual snowflake was originally hand painted in icy tones of blue and silver.

Wilson Bentley(1865–1931) of Jericho, Vermont, was a farmer and a highly-regarded amateur meteorologist who photographed snow—or more precisely, thousands of individual snow crystals. Drawn to their beauty and seemingly endless variety, Bentley isolated and captured these crystals in simple, stark photographs, creating his first successful image—a ...Read rest of Chalk

Blue and white is always in style. The Pattern of Month this month is Mottahedeh's Imperial Blue.

Since the Ming Dynasty, imperial blue and white porcelains have been prized by collectors and connoisseurs around the world. Edged in 22k gold, this underglazed blue dinner service is based on a Chinese export porcelain pattern, ca. 1730. The elegant design features a central flowered medalion, continuous collar and floral sprays.

Our ever popular Tobacco Leaf is the Pattern of the Month this month! With over 40 pieces that we currently sell, it's one of our most sought out designs and what Mottahedeh is truly known for.

This extravagant design was originally made in China, probably for export to the Portuguese and Brazilian markets. Of all the 18th - century dinnerware patterns, this was the most highly prized. A small phoenix bird perches on the leaves of the flowering Nicotiana (Tobacco) plant. Twenty seven colors and 22k gold make up this pattern based on an original in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Mottahedeh Peach
Peach season is upon us! This peach design is an exact reproduction from China's Yongzheng Period (1725-1735), painted in pink and opaque white enamels. The bowl front features five peaches and two bats, symbolizing Wufu, or the five happiness; health, wealth, virtue, old age, and a natural death. It also matches beautifully with a number of our other patterns.

Did you know the piggy bank originated from the 15th century?

Reed & Barton Piggy Bank

In Europe, in the 15th century, nearly all house wares and other household items made from pottery were made out of orange clay called Pygg Clay. This included the containers made to hold small items such as the coins that workers earned each day. The coins would remain in those “pygg jars” until they were needed, so that they wouldn’t be lost.

Interestingly, the name of the barnyard animal did not become “pygg” (or today’s “pig”) until the 18th century. Though you might have been under the impression that piggy banks were named after the animal, the truth of the matter is actually the other way around.

In the 18th century, a potter shaped a pygg jar to look like a pig. People started to use them to save their coins and called ...Read rest of Chalk

Have you seen Mottahedeh's new Palma pattern?

Palma is a reproduction of a dinner service, circa 1840, designed by Fyodor Solntsev, the great Russian art historian, who painted interiors for cathedrals and designed much of the Kremlin under the patronage of Tsar Nicolas I.

At Reed & Barton, this trend is particularly inspiring for us because, of where we are located. The Reed & Barton complex is located in a mill town.
